Udaipur city of dawn is a lovely land around the blue water lake hemmed in by the lush hills of Aravallis. It has kaleidoscope of fairy tale of palaces, lakes, temples and gardens. The city carries the flavor of heroic past, epitomizing velour and chivalry. Udaipur was founded in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the final capital of the erstwhile Mewar Kingdom, located to the south of Nagada on the banks of Banas river.

Regional Settings and Connectivity

Situated in north-eastern part of Girwa Tehsil of Udaipur district, Udaipur is historically and geographically the heart of erstwhile Mewar State. It is located almost in the middle on stretch of Delhi-Mumbai National Highway (Nh8).

Linkage and Connectivity

Udaipur is located almost at the centre of the Delhi-Mumbai National Highway (NH-8).Udaipur is well connected to state capital Jaipur (420 km) in northeast and Ahmedabad (250 km) in southwest. Udaipur is connected to other centers to the state by three state highways, SH-9 connecting Chittorgarh, SH32 connecting Banswara and SH-32 connecting Mount Abu. Udaipur is well connected by road to major cities in India. Brilliant road network ensure people to enjoy a relaxed journey to and from Udaipur. One can also hire taxis and cars to reach Udaipur by road.Udaipur Railway Station is located at a comfortable distance from the city of Udaipur. Rajasthan Railways connects Udaipur station with all the other cities of Rajasthan as well as India. Udaipur Airport namely Maharana Pratap Airport is located near Dabok at a distance of 22 kms from the city. Many domestic airlines connect the city to all the major cities of India including Jaipur, Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. Regular air services are available for Delhi and Mumbai.

Natural Drainage and Water Bodies

Udaipur is drained by Ahad River, which is the main river of the region which flows from the North West towards South East. The river is seasonal river, which originates from a 991 meter high hill in the north eastern part of Gogunda plateau. The region is blessed with numerous water bodies. The major water bodies in the region are Lake Pichola, Lake Fatehsagar, Lake Govardhan Sagar, Udai Sagar Lake and Badi Talab.

45 new buses-53 buses will run on 16 routes out of which 45 buses are yet to be added. A work order for tender of 32 crore rupees will be issued in the next 10 days. Earlier this tender was kept at 20 crore rupees but seeing the necessity it was raised to 32 crore rupees.

An adventure zone is also on the agenda to be created at Manikya Lal Verma Park. This will add fun and thrill for local public. Company making fish aquarium and ropeway in Udaipur has shown interest in this project. Financial bid for this project is open and will be finalized in 10 days . As per Siddharth Sihag, Commissioner Municipal Corporation, planning for the smart city project is in its final shape. By June all work orders will be passed and in the following 2 years entire project will be completed. This will give the appropriate smart city look to Udaipur.

A solid waste plant in Balicha worth 17 crores will be completed in next 2 months. A dumping yard in Titardi and heritage look of wall city is also on the agenda and will start in the one or 2 months.

Economy

Udaipur has a diversified economic base. The major contributions to the city’s economy come from tourism, agriculture and mineral industries.The handicraft and cottage industry sectors play an important part in contributing to the growing economy. The city has also been included under the Smart Cities mission initiated by the Government of India and is selected in the list of first 20 cities to be developed as smart cities. In the 2001 census of India, 36% of Udaipur resident were reported to be meaningfully employed.

Handicrafts

Udaipur is well known for handicrafts such as paintings, marble articles, silver arts and terracotta. The Shilpgram is a platform where regional handicraft and hand-loom products are developed. Craft bazaars are organized by the Shilpgram, with an aim to encourage the regional arts and crafts, the handicrafts and hand-loom works.

The Oberoi Udaivilas has been ranked as the world’s number 1 hotel in 2015. The Taj Lake Palace and the Leela Palace Udaipur are also amongst the most expensive hotels in the country. With various other renowned hotel chains present in the city, the tourism sector has been a fairly large contributor to the economic growth and fame of Udaipur.

Climate

Udaipur city has particularly a tropical climate. The three main seasons, summer, monsoon and winter respectively, dominate the city of Udaipur. Situated at an altitude of 598m above sea level, moreover in a desert area, Udaipur is the only place in Rajasthan that has quite moderate climate throughout the year. In summers, the scorching sun makes the city hot whereas in winters the weather is pleasant. Being located in the desert lands of Rajasthan, the climate and weather of Udaipur is usually hot. The summer season runs from Mid-March to June and touches the temperature of 38°C. Monsoons arrive in the month of July heralded by dust and thunderstorms. The city annually receives around 637 mm of rainfall. This scanty amount of rainfall makes Udaipur more humid. The humidity reaches to the extent of 90 % during the months of Monsoons.

Udaipur Smart City projects starting in June 2018

3 big work orders for Smart City Udaipur project will be placed in the next three months. Under the smart city project, Wall city will have 24 hour water supply, electricity, sewerage line, all-in-one-cable and also more buses for public transport in city areas. This work order is likely to give Udaipur city the top most position in the category of smart cities. In the next 15 days, work orders for projects worth 480 crores for 18 wards will be finalized. Work will begin once the tender process is final. L&T Company will take care of 24 hour water supply, electricity, sewerage lines and all-in-one-cable ducts.Work order will be issued in 15 days for this purpose. For the next 10 year, L&T will be responsible for repair and maintenance, too. Budget negotiations are still on for this work order.

Metals and Minerals industries

Udaipur district is particularly rich in mineral resources as a large variety of important minerals are found here. Copper, lead, zinc, and silver, industrial minerals like phosphate, asbestos, calcite, limestone, Talc (soapstone), barites, wollastonite and marble are the major driving resources behind the industries based in the city. Marble is exclusively mined, processed and exported from here around the world. The marble industry is well set and established with proper infrastructure and technological support for mining and processing. It is the largest sector giving employment to many people of the city and the immigrants from nearby areas. Udaipur is also home to the world’s second largest Zinc producer, Hindustan Zinc.

Electronics, electrical equipment design and manufacturing

Udaipur is host to medium and large enterprises designing and manufacturing electronic instruments, control panels, sensitive metering technology and LED lamps. The electrical and electronics industry in Udaipur employs over 6000 people. These businesses are Tempsens, Pyrotech and Secure Meters Ltd.

Agriculture

Agriculture as in most other parts of the country remains a leading sector in the city’s economy. The Major crops of the area are Maize and Jowar in Kharif season and Wheat and Mustard in the Rabi season. Pulses, Groundnut and vegetables like brinjals are some of the major food products grown in the city. The Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, along with its affiliated institutions, has been working towards identifying, designing, preparing and adapting new techniques in the field of production technology for agricultural development since its establishment.

Retail

Udaipur has both traditional as well as modern retail shopping destinations. The traditional markets include Bapu Bazaar, Chetak Circle, Suraj Pole, Nehru Bazaar, Bada Bazaar and Chand Pole, while the areas including Durga Nursery Road, Shakti Nagar and Sudkhadia Circle provide opportunities to new entrants. Udaipur is also progressing towards a mall culture, and has witnessed many retail malls including Celebration Mall, Chetak Shopping Mall, City Centre Mall, Mangalam Square Mall and R.Kay Mall.
