Bank Deposits and Services Increased Due to Jan Dhan<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), an important scheme of the Narendra Modi government to provide financial services to all people in the country, has completed six years. According to the Finance Ministry, about 40 crore beneficiaries are taking advantage of this scheme.<\/p>\n

Deposits in these accounts have increased six-fold in six years. These bank accounts are basically for those who did not like to open a bank account due to the requirement of minimum balance.<\/p>\n

But it is worth noting that the share of deposits of Jan Dhan Yojana in the total demand deposits of commercial banks has increased from 2.8 per cent to 8.6 per cent of the time of completion of one year of the scheme. This indicates that the Jan Dhan account holders are now showing much more pro-active banking services than before. With this, the share of dormant accounts has also declined. Only 60 per cent of Jan Dhan accounts were active in March 2017 whereas the proportion of active accounts has increased to 81 per cent in January 2020.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a tweet, ‘PMJDY is the cornerstone of the people centric economic initiatives of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government. Whether it is direct benefit transfer, financial assistance related to Covid-19, increased wages or life and health insurance cover under PM-Kisan, MNREGA, the first step for all of these was to have an individual bank account of its own. PMJDY has almost met the target of everyone’s bank account. In the last six years, Jan Dhan accounts have been used extensively for the implementation of various schemes.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
