The recent order of NGT on Environment Clearance has once again shown the indiscrimination of Indian rules and regulations. On the one hand, where govt announces regularly to ease the norms to facilitate the running of industries, whereas on the other hand, we are observing the trauma of Formaldehyde producers.<\/p>\n

Lack of coordination between different departments, extends dilemmas of an industrialist. In the present case the SPCB was unknown of the fact that mere NOC issued by state govt (SPCB) is not sufficient but prior approval of EC is mandatory. Thereby it allowed to operate the formaldehyde plants established after 2006.
\nIt is worth mentioning that process of approval of EC starts with the planning stage of the said unit. And installation can be done only after the final clearance.<\/p>\n

The units who are affected by the NGT’s order are serving the plywood industry since long. The current closure order has stormed the plywood industry. Practical approach should be adopted along with saving our environment, which is also our utmost concern.<\/p>\n

Former chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian once pointed out that a major problem with private investment in the country was \u201cstigmatized capital\u201d that private sector investors were essentially seen as a problem, not wealth creators, and that politics and policy tended to have an adversarial relationship with the profit motive rather than harnessing it for the general goods.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It is essential that both the Union and state governments revisit this approach, both when it comes to investment and to investors in general. Private companies must be allowed to make profits. The government’s duty is to protect entrepreneurs and businessmen, not be another source of pressure. It is to be hoped that the struggle will have driven home the lesson that a more cooperative relationship with the private sector, and less stigmatization of capital, are essential for efficiency, investment, and growth. Speaking at the Lok Sabha recently, the prime minister stressed the private sector’s vital role in the economy and asserted that the culture of \u201cabusing\u201d it was no longer acceptable. It’s a piece of advice everyone should follow.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
