How was the festive season? <\/strong><\/span>
\nIndia cloaked an impressive GDP growth in the second quarter and is expected to do well in the long term. It is the fact that, the festive season coincided with the reopening, and we have seen a robust recovery, as always. There is enough reason to believe that the kind of traction we saw in Q2 will continue to a degree<\/strong>. However third wave of pandemic is the biggest risk at present. It is said that the third wave is not so harmful, yet we have to watch the situation till the time passes.<\/p>\n

How do we look at the problems? <\/span><\/strong>
\nI feel that supply issues of raw material will continue and that could lead to some constraints in terms of inputs. Although input prices have come down a bit, they still remain high. This could hamper the growth in some sense.<\/strong> We are on the right track but with pandemics, you really cannot guess exactly. It would depend entirely upon the intensity of the spread. We hope it does not happen, but if it is as virulent as second wave, it would be a different story.<\/p>\n

What fiscal support did we get? <\/span><\/strong>
\nOne of the problems with our economic management of COVID is that in comparison to other countries, the fiscal support was lower than the developed economies and also in comparison to some of our peer emerging economies. So, absence of fiscal support have created problems in the large informal sector that we have.<\/p>\n

What was the effect of stimulus package?<\/span><\/strong>
\nFiscal policy has two components-support and stimulus. The way the government thought about fiscal expansion was largely as a stimulus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I would argue that MSME’s could have been provided better fiscal support.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One can’t entirely blame the government for going slow on fiscal expansion during COVID. We do not have the kind of fiscal space that others have and that is a big constraint.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How do you see the future? <\/span><\/strong>
\nIf you are looking at the pyramid, you are seeing a lot of growth at the top of the pyramid but as you go at the bottom, there are issues. Still there are several issues regarding income in the lower end. Which are to be sorted out. We hope industrialists with the support of government machineries, has the ability to solve the issues brilliantly and successfully.<\/p>\n
