{"id":27729,"date":"2022-05-06T11:38:01","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T06:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/plyinsight.com\/?p=27729"},"modified":"2022-05-06T12:27:45","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T06:57:45","slug":"real-estate-auto-cos-to-1bear-the-brunt-of-rate-hikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plyinsight.com\/hi\/real-estate-auto-cos-to-1bear-the-brunt-of-rate-hikes\/","title":{"rendered":"Real Estate, Auto Cos To Bear The Brunt Of Rate Hikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has eventually decided to adjust to the evolving economic reality.<\/p>\n<p>RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das rightly noted in his statement: \u201cThere is the collateral risk that if inflation remains elevated at these levels for too long, it can de-anchor inflation expectations which, in turn, can become self-fulfilling and detrimental to growth and financial stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides, higher prices of edible oil, supply chain disruptions because of a surge in Covid cases in some parts of the world, particularly China, are affecting prices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The sudden hike of 40 basis points in policy rates by the Reserve Bank of India is somewhat shocking, but such action has become necessary. Inflation rates in India have been beyond the RBI\u2019s upper band of tolerance and the rationale of the move makes sense. At the moment there were only two options. Either the rupee would have been allowed to fall or the current account deficit would have been controlled by raising rates. Both were bad choices, but raising rates was the better option, which will control demand for the time being.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The hike in rates, although expected, was only likely to come through in the June policy review. The quantum of hike (40 bps) in this out-of-turn announcement was also a surprise as the markets expected the RBI to hike by 25 bps.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It would seem the RBI would want to normalize liquidity within the next 12 months, and possibly raise the repo rate above the expected inflation rate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Real estate and automobiles, which were showing signs of a nascent recovery, will bear the brunt of higher interest rates following the central bank\u2019s rate hike because customers will delay buying new homes and cars as their EMI may be increased.<\/p>\n<p>Home sales and new launches had seen very positive returns in last few quarters. Developers relying on external sources of funds may also feel the heat, as their cost of borrowing will rise with banks expected to raise rates.<\/p>\n<p>The RBI move comes when the real estate
