{"id":27771,"date":"2022-05-11T12:51:40","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T07:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/plyinsight.com\/?p=27771"},"modified":"2022-06-23T16:37:14","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T11:07:14","slug":"rupee-likely-to-hit-78-by-june-end1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plyinsight.com\/hi\/rupee-likely-to-hit-78-by-june-end1\/","title":{"rendered":"Rupee likely to hit 78\/$ by June-end"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>The rupee breached the psychological barrier of 77 to a dollar to hit a lifetime low of 77.50 amid the greenback strengthening against major global currencies on the back of a hawkish stance by the US Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As the elevated US yields remains a big risk factor for emerging-market currencies like the rupee, experts sees the rupee hitting 78.5 to a dollar before the month end.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Currency dealers said there was sporadic intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The intention was to cushion the fall and not to reverse the trend.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The RBI has been intervening aggressively in the foreign exchange (forex) markets by selling dollars, which resulted in forex reserves coming down by around $45 billion from their all-time high of $642 billion reached for the week ended September 3, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The rupee looks vulnerable due to policy tightening by central banks, dollar index moving higher, RBI\u00a0 forex reserves falling below $600 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The RBI is believed to maintain forex reserves of $600 billion, given the uncertainties. Although the reserves still form around 12 months of imports, they can extinguish very quickly. The RBI may be required to set some aside for a rainy day. Therefore, its interventions will be sporadic, now that 77 has been breached. We could see a level of 79 by the end of June.<\/p>\n<p>The slide in the rupee was expected, given several trends. The US Dollar is hardening as a result of the US Federal Reserve\u2019s (US Fed\u2019s) actions. Foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling continues.<\/p>\n<p>While export growth is good, the trade deficit has expanded, due in part to higher energy prices and a larger general import bill as the economy recovers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A weaker rupee has some benefits, especially since the yuan has dropped in value too. It offers some protection against cheap imports and it makes exporters more competitive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As a consequence, investors will be revaluing export- oriented sectors, which will gain in competitiveness and also deliver potentially higher revenues and profits when reckoned in rupee terms. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Investors will also be looking to cut exposure to import-intensive business since these will incur larger rupee-denominated costs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone
