The reserves in early September accounted for 9 month\u2019s imports projected for this fiscal year. A year ago, the reserves accounted for close to 15 months\u2019 imports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With the Federal Reserve\u2019s latest estimate indicating rate hikes of at least 100 basis point more in 2022, strength in the dollar is given. What will determine the extent of the rupee\u2019s depreciation is the Reserve Bank of India\u2019s (RBI\u2019s) approach to interventions in the currency market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The RBI has left no stone unturned to shield the rupee in 2022. Consequently, its foreign exchange reserve has fallen to a two-year low of $550.87 billion versus $631.53 billion before the Ukraine war broke out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIf you look at rupee move it explains that dollar selling by locals has reduced and this is a signal that they\u2019re (the RBI) more tolerant of a weaker rupee and would allow it to trade in line with the fundamentals and at the same time manage their forex reserves more prudently, especially after a hawkish Fed,\u201d an economic researcher said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The RBI\u2019s aggressive dollar sales-$22 billion together in the spot market in June and July-have contributed\u00a0 to the rupee outperforming other emerging market currencies over the past one month, during which it has weakened 1.2 per cent, faring better than nine others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAs we move close to December, rates will be more accurate. The euro and pound are all at historical lows\u201d said another expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The central Bank here is expected to sell dollars, but analysts are divided as to the extent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to a poll the rupee is not seen suffering a free fall. For the month ahead, it is seen in the band 79.50-82.00, with the median of expectations at 81.Till the end of December the poll showed a range of 78.50-83.00 with the median again at 81.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Home-grown companies are preparing for life after the rupee fell to 80 versus the US greenback. Companies without a natural hedge like export earnings are rushing to take forward cover as they expect the rupee to fall gradually in the next year to as much as 86-87 to a dollar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the short and medium term, analyst\u2019s are advising companies to take the right kind of derivatives products depending on their exposure.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17627\"
