After that, new notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 were introduced. While the primary objective of the demonetization exercise was to eliminate black money, another objective was to accelerate digital payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The COVID-19 pandemic led to a nationwide lockdown in 2020 and further boosted digital transactions. UPI benefited the most in this. However, the dependence on cash did not decrease. Before the demonetization exercise, the public had Rs 17 lakh crore currencies, which have now increased to about Rs 31 lakh crore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At present, the share of cash in the total economy, if seen in percentage, is less than the demonetization implemented in the year 2016. While the size of the economy has grown by 1.7 times during this period. Therefore, the total figure of cash circulation should be seen in the right perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The country&#8217;s nominal GDP growth rate in FY2016 stood at 10.5 per cent while cash in circulation registered a growth rate of 15.5 per cent. Now this share has come down to 11.8 percent in the latest figures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is very wrong that we are comparing the total amount of cash in circulation with
