on veneer surface and the Resin is then cured under pressure between layers of veneer into highly branched, irreversible Polymeric mass during hot pressing of plywood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The weight ratio of urea and formalin (37% formaldehyde) for making UF resin suitable for making Plywood is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">U: F = 1: 2.3-2.5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most widely used weight ratio is U: F = 1: 2.33.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Properties of UF resin which are checked and Maintained at plant level as standard for making plywood are flow time, water tolerance, gel time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Water tolerance: Should be 2-3 times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Flow time (as an alternative measure to viscosity): 20 \u2013 22 seconds when measured in B-4 flow cup of IS: 3944.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gel time: 2.5 \u2013 3.0 minutes at 100 C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Storage life of this resin is nearly one month when kept in a sealed container at 27 C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If higher flow time of the resin is needed the weight ratio of U: F =1: 2.5 can be used; but cooking Time in the second stage (acid reaction) will be longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34353 aligncenter\" #000000;\"><strong>Formaldehyde emission from UF bonded Plywood has become a matter of concern due to causing Health hazard to human from inhalation of formaldehyde.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Higher ratio of formalin will leave a substantial Amount of free formaldehyde in the resin which is not desirable.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">To increase the viscosity of resin a widely used practice is to add 1.0-1.5 % (weight basis) of polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) on total urea during resin manufacture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">PVA will enhance rheological properties of Resin and will help in uniform spread of glue over veneer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During long storage of UF resin, the viscosity goes up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Highly viscous resin poses problem in Formulating glue mix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To resist fast thickening of resin, the usual practice followed during Preparation of resin is to keep aside 10% of the total urea at the beginning of the resin preparation and this 2nd urea is added to the resin when it is being cooled before discharge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This 2nd urea addition will retard fast thickening of resin and also act as scavenger to trap free formaldehyde to reduce Formaldehyde emission from plywood during and uses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Formaldehyde emission from UF bonded plywood has become a matter of concern due to causing Health hazard to human from inhalation of formaldehyde.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the ways to reduce formaldehyde Emission is to use lower ratio formaldehyde to urea in the resin preparation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But there is limit to lower the ratio of formaldehyde as too low amount of formaldehyde will not produce required cross Linked polymer as required for good wood to wood bonding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At weight ratio below 1:2.0 of U: F has been found to be slowly reducing the bond quality in plywood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Using scavenger like melamine or Natural material like tannin in UF resin to reduce formaldehyde from plywood is an
