The World Bank is concerned that \u201cfurther adverse shocks\u201d could push the global economy into recession in 2023. The warning is contained in an abstract for the bi-annual \u201cGlobal Economic Prospects\u201d report visible on the group’s Open knowledge Repository website.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even without another crisis, global growth this year is expected to decelerate sharply, reflecting synchronous policy tightening aimed at containing very high inflation, worsening financial downturn conditions, and continued disruptions from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, \u201cthe World Bank said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUrgent global and national efforts\u201d are needed to mitigate the risk of such downturn a as well as debt distress in emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs), where investment growth is expected to remain below the average of the past two decades, the Washington based lender said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Central bankers from around the world aggressively raise interest rate to ease price pressures while governments support businesses and people by containing energy costs.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva started 2023 with a warning that the world faces \u201ca touch year, tougher than the year we leave behind.\u201d One-third of the global economy will be in recession because of the US, the EU and China are all slowing down simultaneously, she told in an interview.<\/span><\/p>\n
