A parliamentary panel has asked the government to increase financial assistance provided under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) to help beneficiaries in completion of housed and improve monitoring houses being constructed under the flagship scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 30-member committee on estimates, asked the ministry of rural development to revise the financial assistance provided to help beneficiaries in timely completion of houses sanctioned.<\/span><\/p>\n

At present, the unit assistance per house is 1.20 Lakh rupees in plain areas and 1.30 lakh rupees in hilly areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe committee observed that due to cost escalation of various construction materials and labour charges, the beneficiaries are finding it difficult to complete construction of houses with the funds at their disposal,\u201d said the report, tabled in the Lok Sabha.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It said 70,000, the threshold limited of the loan that a homeless person can raise, seems \u201cvery meager\u201d and suggested that in view of the increasing construction material prices, the ministry could raise the assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

The government had targeted completion of 29.5 million houses between 2016-17 and 2021-22. Now, the term of the mission has been extended till March 2024. The committee asked the ministry to draw up a proposal to have \u201cindexed cost of construction\u201d as a baseline to sanction funds which would benefit the targeted beneficiaries.<\/span><\/p>\n
