In India, using electricity during the daytime will result in lower bills, while using electricity at night will lead to higher bills. The government is planning to reduce electricity rates during the day to encourage the use of renewable energy and increase rates during the night. Initially, this system will be implemented for commercial and industrial consumers and extended to other consumer categories, after one year excluding the agricultural sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the new electricity regulations, there will be a 20% reduction in electricity rates during solar hours (defined by the state electricity regulatory commission as eight hours) compared to normal rates, while during peak electricity usage hours, the rates will be 20% higher.<\/span>
\nThis arrangement is expected to reduce the demand for electricity from the grid during peak hours, especially when air conditioning (AC) is used in most Indian households.<\/span><\/p>\n

This change will be implemented for commercial and industrial consumers from April 2024 and extended to other consumers, excluding the agricultural sector, after a year. The Ministry of Power stated in a statement, “The government has made two changes in the existing electricity tariff system in the Electricity (Consumer Rights) Rules, 2020. These changes are related to the start of the Time of Day (ToD) tariff system and making provisions related to smart meters more rational.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Under this system, instead of charging a flat rate for electricity throughout the day, the price paid by consumers for electricity will vary according to different times of the day. During solar hours, the rate will be lower by 10% to 20% compared to the regular rate, while during peak electricity usage; it will be higher by 10% to 20%.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
