Freight rates may jump more amid Ukraine crisis

The invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces has triggered panic among Indian Importers, coming as it does after over a year of high freight rates and container shortages. Freight rates to several ports in India had jumped eight to ten times last year and are already on a rise in the last one week.

According to shipping companies, the cost of chartering a 4,200 TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) has soared from around $ 8,000 a day eight months ago to around $ 70,,000 a day now. As a result of the Russian invasion, it is expected to reach at $1.0 lakh per day. Shipping companies are worried over the price increase in crude oil.

Regarding movement of containers, India is the best managed area in the world. That’s why transport movement is normal amidst disturbances.

Industry is going to be effected tremendously further due to increase in expected freight rates. Cost of imported materials including chemicals may shoot up. It will be troublesome for the plywood and panel industries, who are struggling for correction in the market post covid.

यूक्रेन संकट से माल भाड़ा और बढ़ेगा

एक साल से भी ज्यादा समय से मालभाड़ा ऊंचा बना हुआ है और कंटेनरों की किल्लत भी परेशान कर रही है। उस पर यूक्रेन के खिलाफ रूस की कार्रवाई ने देसी आयातकों में घबराहट और बढ़ा दी है। पिछले साल भारत के विभिन्न बंदरगाहों पर मालभाड़ा 8 से 10 गुना बढ़ा है और पिछले एक हफ्ते के दौरान इसमें ओर इजाफा हुआ है।

जहाजरानी क्षेत्र की कंपनियों के मुताबिक 4,200 टीईयू (20 फुट लंबी यूनिट) की अनुमानित लागत आठ महीने पहले 8,000 डॉलर प्रतिदिन थी, जो अब बढ़कर 70,000 डॉलर हो गई हैं। रूस के हमले के कारण यह 1 लाख डॉलर प्रतिदिन तक भी पहुंच सकती है। जहाजरानी कंपनियां कच्चे तेल के दाम में तेजी से भी चिंता में पड़ गई हैं।

जहां तक कंटेनर की आवाजाही की बात है तो दुनिया भर में भारत सबसे प्रबंधित क्षेत्र है। यही वजह है कि व्यवधान के बावजूद मालवहन सामान्य हो रहा है।

परिवहन में बाधा आने पर उद्योग में व्यापक असर पड़ने की संभावना है। इससे आयात होने वाले केमिकल्स सहित सभी वस्तुओं की कीमतों में वृद्धि होने के आसार हैं। इस वृद्धि को आत्मसात करना प्लाइवुड और पेनल उद्योग के लिए काफी तकलीफ देह साबित हो सकता है, जबकि उद्योग अभी महामारी की मार से उबरने की  कोशिस में लगा है।
