Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, speaking on the theme New Realities of the Agriculture Sector, said that it is time to deliberate at the national level on why fertilizer subsidies should be given to companies. Instead, the subsidy could be transferred directly to farmers.
Chouhan stated, “I am also seeking farmers’ opinions because, through technology, fertilizer subsidies can be directly transferred to farmers’ bank accounts. We are considering this possibility. If you ask me, I would say that a large portion of the fertilizer subsidy gets diverted, which should not happen. The entire benefit should go directly to the farmers.”
While discussing the National Agriculture Roadmap, the Union Agriculture Minister said that the government is working on three types of agricultural roadmaps: one at the national level, another tailored to each state, and a third based on individual crops.
The minister further informed that more than 85 million farmers have already been issued digital Farmer IDs, which include details of their landholdings and crops. This database enables Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and helps prevent fraudulent or inflated claims.
