How local plywood industry, is effected by import especially in Kerala?
The prices of imported plywood is too low to compete in the market. Some of the manufacturers are now resorted to marketing imported plywood instead of manufacturing the products in their own factories. This is very disappointing scenerio.
Imports cannot be stopped
The government launched the ‘Make in India’ campaign. This program has been initiated to promote local industry. But the Make in India program is also being affected by imports. Cheaper goods are reaching in Northern India from Nepal. Whereas goods are transported to Kerala from Vietnam. Due to global conditions, imports have decreased slightly, to relive the market.
Can imports be checked with the implementation of BIS?
Definitely. Because the imported product will also have to maintain its quality as per the standards of BIS. If the quality of import is at par with us then we can easily compete with them. Because at present the quality of imported products is inferior and hence probably cheaper too.
Still the question is how long can BIS stop releasing licenses to foreign manufactures. This should be completely banned forever to protect the indigenous industries. Because it is not going to have much impact in a year or two.
The deadline for Mandatory BIS has been extended,
It is disappointing BIS should have been implemented immediately. This will have an adverse impact on our local industry. Moreover, the quality of the imported goods should be checked and tested to meet our standards. Only such provisions can save our timber industry.
The problem is that most of the units in Kerala are non BIS licensee.
It is true, 90 percent of the units in Kerala do not have BIS license. We are trying to explain the benefits of BIS to the industrialists, at our association level. Positive response is visible. People are now trying to understand the process of BIS. However as QCO has been delayed by a year, it seems everyone’s enthusiasm will cool down.
What can be done to spread awareness?
A campaign should be launched to convince such industrialists. Because when quality standards are fixed and we all will produce high quality goods, import will be restricted auto matically.
We have set up our unit spending a lot of hard work and money. Preserving it should be the priority for all of us. We are now capable to produce quality goods.
