The All Bharat Plywood & Laminates Trade Association (ABPLTA) has urged the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to provide greater clarity and support to traders regarding the mandatory BIS certification for plywood, particle board, MDF, and related products, which will come into effect from 28th August 2025.

In a representation addressed to BIS, the association highlighted that traders are facing significant challenges due to inadequate information and awareness about ISI/BIS compliance requirements. Recent inspections and raids by BIS teams at retail shops and trader premises have raised concerns among members of the industry.

“Traders purchase materials directly from manufacturers and suppliers, relying on them to ensure that products carry valid ISI marks and comply with BIS standards. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult for traders to independently verify the authenticity of ISI marks or confirm whether the supplied materials fully meet BIS norms,” the association said.

According to ABPLTA, this has resulted in reputational risks for traders, even though they are not directly involved in manufacturing or branding activities. The association has therefore requested BIS to shift its focus toward verifying and monitoring manufacturers, who are primarily responsible for compliance with standards and proper use of the ISI mark.

The association has sought the following measures from BIS:

  • Clear guidance and awareness sessions for traders to identify valid ISI-marked products.
  • A verification mechanism for traders to confirm the authenticity of ISI marks used by suppliers and manufacturers.
  • Priority inspections at the manufacturing level to prevent the supply of non-compliant products entering the market.

“We look forward to your kind intervention and necessary steps to safeguard genuine traders and support us in fulfilling the BIS requirements responsibly,” said Alok Mohta, Joint Secretary of ABPLTA, in the appeal.
