Sub: – Proposal for Review of Preservative Treatment in IS 4990:2024 Plywood for concrete shuttering work in the next CED-20 Meeting

Dear Sir,

We are pleased to submit our proposal for reviewing the preservative treatment requirements in IS 4990:2024-Plywood for Concrete Shuttering Works, as per the inputs provided on April 1st, 2025. The proposal includes a draft with suggested amendments to the preservative retention clause.

We kindly request that you consider this proposal for deliberation and potential adoption in the upcoming revision of IS 4990.

Current provision for retention in IS 4990 Suggested provision
Clause 10.11

Retention of Preservative

Clause 10.11

Retention of Preservative

Plywood shall be treated as per 6.6 and shall have a retention of not less than 12 kg/m³, when tested in accordance with IS 2753 (Part 1).

Clause 6.6

The plywood after manufacture shall be given a preservative treatment as given in IS 5539 and conditioned to a moisture content not exceeding 15 percent. The preservative used shall have a copper-chrome-boron (CCB) composition or acid copper-chrome (ACC) composition, with retention of not less than 12 kg/m³.

Retention of preservative- Nil

Plywood used for concrete shuttering work must conform to IS 4990 standards – construction details, surface finish and flexural properties aligned with most international specifications. However, the specified chemical retention requirement of 12 kg/m³ for preservative treatment should be reconsidered based on the usage pattern that is discarded after use and no requirement of long storage.

Based on the suggestions received from the technical committee, we propose the following provision for the preservative retention clause as mentioned in IS 4990.

Justification

  • Shuttering plywood is used in alkaline cement environments. The high pH of cement acts as a natural biocide, reducing the risk of termite and fungal attack during use.
  • Shuttering plywood is specifically used for concrete shuttering work and is typically discarded after the work is completed. Due to its usage pattern, it is not usually stored in stock for an extended period before being consumed.
