North Malabar Plywood and Doors Manufacturers Association conducted a BIS QCO, Lab QC, and Cluster Lab awareness programme on 16/Mar/2025 (Sunday), at Malabar Residency, Kannur, Kerala.
The event started at 11AM and concluded at 3.00PM.
Vaidyanathan, Secretary-WTA, and Director – KRDF, addressed the gathering and delivered detailed talk on BIS new standards, QCO and took the Q&A session spanning more than 3 hours.
Manufacturers of Kannur are mostly small and micro units, manufacturing plywood, block board and doors. Being small and micro units, most of the units run on low scale, with minimum technical support.
Various points, directly related to their day-to-day working, were discussed in the seminar. Mr. Vaidyanathan tried to explain every point in detail, satisfying the audience.
Key points of the discussion:
Kannur has lots of job work door manufacturers. All small players with 5-7 daylights. They in turn provide their doors as raw material to membrane door mfrs. They are also very small units with only the membrane press and side finishing. So, will these intermediate flush door supplies come under the QCO (from mfr to membrane door mfr)?

Similarly, lot of small units make block boards from bits and pieces. These are all sold locally for people buying from the lower economic strata of society. Consumers who want cheap and low cost material. How can such supplies be maintained? Should we waste the entire wood resources and use only the large battens and make full solid block boards?
- Bigger companies use maximum full core veneers. And sell away the fali core and short cores to small units, who in turn utilise these for making low cost boards for many purposes – low income groups, packing boards, crates and equipment packing etc. These are also purchased by locals and carpenters from some dealer also. How can these supplies be managed?
- How to make cluster labs and maintain them?
- Differentiation between new BWP and new 710.
- How to convert small and low cost units to quality manufacturers?
- Lab equipments needed and preventive points for good quality boards.
- How to avoid bending and warping in mixed wood boards?
- Importance of resin and glue mixing in plywood manufacturing.
- Significance of slow and low temperature drying for achieving MoE and MoR, mainly along the grain.
- A session Q&A from QC staff of factories.
