After 18 months of QCO, the process of giving BIS certification to foreign shoe manufacturers can start now.
After about 18 months, the Indian government will now start the process of granting BIS license to foreign shoe manufacturers. It will clear the way for foreign brands like Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Armani, Exchange, Super Dry to operate in India once again. Import of footwear of these brands will start again in India as soon as BIS certification is done.
Ever since India has implemented the Quality Control Order for the shoe industry, only those shoes were allowed in the Indian market which have BIS license. It resulted in the stoppage of import of foreign shoes in India.
Its effect is being seen gobally, because India is a big market for shoes. Therefore, foreign shoe manufacturers were demanding that they should also be given BIS certificate. They are ready to comply with the standards of Bureau of Indian Standards.
However, Indian officials said that the process of certification to foreign shoe industry has not been started yet. Because the government wants to curb imports to encourage the indigenous shoe industry. Officials said that Nike Inc., headquartered in the US, had contacted the Indian government several times for BIS certification for its global suppliers. But till now they had not succeeded in their efforts.
Finally, they raised this issue, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to America, before the meeting with Trump. Which has helped them now.
Similar situation can also arise in the wood industry, but when? only the future will decide. When, on which issue the government may have to agree to any country at the international level, cannot be assumed. But it is certain that it may take time. And it cannot happen very soon at least.
Therefore, the Indian wood industry has the time gap to strengthen itself, so that when ever foreign panel manufacturers get BIS certification, the Indian wood industry can strongly compete with them. If they successfully do this, not only will the Prime Minister’s dream of “Make in India – Made in India” come true, but the industry will also get strengthened in the country.
The plywood and panel manufacturers have a golden opportunity to take full advantage of this time.
