What was the purpose of the Estonian delegation visiting Gandhidham?
Estonia is a country adjacent to Russia. It is little far from Ukraine. It is situated between Norway, Sweden and Finland. A delegation who visited Gandhidham, were welcomed by us at Costa Ply.
There was a detailed discussion on the technology and working style of Indian and Estonian forests. Actually, a large part of Estonia is covered with forests, which is a major part in their export. They are exploring the possibility of exporting their wood to India.
Which species of wood is available there?
SPF wood means “Spruce-Pine-Fir”. This is the species of trees that make SPF wood. SPF wood can be broadly divided into two different species in North America. East and West. In the Eastern SPF wood species, there are White Spruce, Black Spruce, Red Spruce, Jack Pine and Balsam Fir.
What is the possibility of this wood in India?
Right now they are selling it in Europe, New Zealand and America. Importing Estonian wood to India is a little expensive. However it is also true that the quality of wood is better than other woods imported to India. However, they have given assurance regarding the price. The government is also supporting the wood producers. Their ambassador accompanied them during the visit of the delegation, to Gandhi Dham. Possibilities for trade with India are being explored.
What is the current demand for wood in India
Even in this era of flourishing of panel products like plywood and MDF, the demand for wood is stable. The main reason for this is the natural beauty of wood which attracts every type of consumer. The problem is that there is lack of intention for increasing the quality of wood. Attention has to be paid to this. Every kind of wood is available here for furniture. But enhancing the quality and preservation of wood is necessary.
How can the quality of wood be increased
Seasoning of wood should be mandatory for it. Due to the excessive use of unseasoned wood in India, people are diverting from it. In absence of proper seasoning, it expands in summer and shrink in winters. Unseasoned wood is actually very prone properly to insects. All these defects can be checked by seasoning the wood properly. The government should also emphasize to spread awareness about this.
What measures should be taken
There is a lack of awareness. At the government level as well as at the level of saw mill operators. No one is eager to accept the desired changes. Whereas this is the biggest need in present circumstances. New age technology should be used in saw mills.
Saw mill operators will also have to adopt modern technology. Saw mill operators do not have much information and knowledge about the technical advancements in the field. Even if they do not make it fully automated and start with semi-automated technology, lakhs of cubic feet of wood can be saved in the country.
According to a rough estimate, if 1 million cubic meters are consumed annually in India, then its cost will be 50,000 crores @5,000. If we are able to save even 1 percent in this, then it will be a whooping 500 crores. We have 80 thousand to one lakh saw mills. There is a need to modernize all of them.
How will the quality be ensured?
There is a need to make special strict law for conservation and enhancement of the quality of wood. As the BIS is becoming mandatory in other wood products, it will be implemented in saw mills too. Process has been started as per my knowledge in BIS. New rules are bound to come regarding quality. Net zero grading, seasoning will be necessary after that.
People objects such laws?
Some people oppose at the start of any move, but if the law is for good, then everyone agrees later. The saw mill operators should be explained that enhancing the quality of wood is very important. Once there is a law, those who do not pay attention now, will be legally bound. Strict action will also be possible against law breaker.
This will increase the production cost and ultimately the price of wood?
At present, most furniture manufacturers are using unseasoned raw wood. In the absence of local seasoning facilities, raw wood is being used freely in homes. After a period of time, the consumer gets annoyed due to the degradation of wood. And then he starts looking for alternatives turning away from wood.
However, the Indian public is traditionally attached with wood products. If the consumer is assured by getting products made of seasoned wood, he is ready to pay the increased price.
On the other hand, due to lack of technology and seasoning, there is a lot of wastage. If we can control this wastage with perfect automated machines, and thereby recovery increases, there will be no burden on the cost. Rather, it will compliment each other.
