India needs to change the definition of ‘job’ to include self-employed people to enhance the manpower, brain power and skill power participation rate in the country; labour and employment minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.
The minister said there should be synergy in thought and action between the government and industry, as the government aims to make India a developed nation by 2047. India’s high growth rate of 7-8 % will lead to an increase in purchasing power, which in turn will push consumption, manufacturing and demand for skilled workforce. “Skills are automatically generated when demand increases,”
“Industry and government should be on the same wavelength and need to move forward in synergy,” Mandaviya said, reiterating the need to set up a taskforce for workforce analysis in the country to meet the sector-specific requirement for skilled workers.
Mooting the idea of giving industry the status of an ‘establishment’ to impart skills training based in its requirement, he said this would help create demand driven trained manpower for each sector.
Mandaviya said, that there is a need to change the mindset of youth in India and to link skill enhancement with industry requirements.
