Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the newly constructed Urban Extension Road (UER) 2 will bring down travel time to Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) from Kundli on the Delhi-Haryana border to 20 minutes instead of two hours. The UER 2 is expected to be thrown open to the public before December 2023.

“While coming to Delhi, after Panipat, there is a peripheral ring road. After that, a new ring road called UER 2 has been built in Delhi. It will open in the next two to three months. After the construction of this road, you will be able to reach T3 airport directly in just 20 minutes instead of two hours. We have also built a large tunnel inside the road at the Shiv Murti junction, which connects T3 from below the airstrip,” Gadkari says.

UER 2 will be the country’s first elevated urban expressway and is expected to reduce the traffic problem between Delhi and Gurugram.

Salient Features of the expressway:

  • It’s a 29-km-long country’s first elevated eight-lane access control expressway.
  • Toll collection work on the Dwarka Expressway will be completely automated and the entire project will be equipped with Efficient Transport System (ITS).
  • The road network of this expressway is of four levels — tunnel, underpass, grade road, elevated road and a flyover being built over the flyover.
  • This will improve the connectivity of the people of Haryana and West Delhi with IGI Airport. In Haryana, this expressway will intersect Pataudi Road near Harsaru and Farukhnagar near Basai.
  • It will also cross the Delhi-Rewari railway line near Gurgaon Sector-88 (B) and UER 2 at Bharthal.
  • The expressway will be connected to Global City with Dwarka Sector-21 via Sectors 88, 83, 84, 99, 113 of Gurugram.
