Tripled Air passenger raise hopes for fast recovery

With more states lifting lockdowns this month, the average number of passengers travelling per day has tripled from a low of 42,000 in May to 125,000, from the third week of June onwards.

The figures, based on feedback from leading airlines as well as airport companies who expect the trend to continue for the rest of this month, raise hopes that the recovery after the second wave could be faster than the recovery after last year’s national lockdown when it took three months for passenger numbers to double from May when flights restarted.

“The recovery has been far faster… we have gone up three-fold in less than a month from the lowest figure in May,” said an executive with a leading airport company.

Airlines are divided as to what the future holds. A source in the know of IndiGo’s plans said it was impossible to predict growth numbers due to uncertainties such as when the third wave will erupt and how bad it will be. Others say there seems to be a three-month window before the next wave can arrive and are hopeful that the numbers will soar to 200,000 by July-end if the current levels (which are half of pre-pandemic levels), continue.

अधिकतर राज्यों और शहरों में इस महीने लाॅकडाउन खत्म होने के साथ ही हवाई यात्रियों की संख्या भी बढ़ी है। अग्रणी विमानन कंपनियों और हवाई अड्डा कंपनियों से मिली जानकारी के अनुसार मई में देश भर में रोजाना हवाई यात्रा करने वाले लोगों की औसत संख्या घटकर 42,000 रह गई थी जो जून के तीसरे हफ्ते से बढ़कर रोजाना करीब 1.25 लाख पहुंच गई है।

हवाई यात्रियों की संख्या बढ़ने से कोरोना की दूसरी लहर के बाद विमानन क्षेत्र में महामारी की पहली लहर की तुलना में तेजी से सुधार की उम्मीद जगी है। एक अग्रणी हवाई अड्डा कंपनी के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने कहा, ‘अच्छी बात यह है कि सुधार महामारी की पहली लहर की अपेक्षा ज्यादा तेज है। पिछली बार हवाई यात्रियों की संख्या मई 2020 के अंत से दोगुना होने में करीब तीन महीने का वक्त लगा था। लेकिन इस बार मई के निचले स्तर से एक महीने से भी कम समय में यात्रियों की संख्या तीन गुनी हो गई है।’ उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि मई में औसत दैनिक यात्रियों की संख्या 66,000 के करीब थी, जो अब बढ़कर दोगुनी हो चुकी है।

हालांकि विमानन कंपनियां आने वाले समय में यात्रियों की संख्या बढ़ने को लेकर बंटे हुए हैं। इंडिगो की योजना के जानकार सूत्रों ने कहा कि अनिश्चितता बरकरार रहने से यात्रियों की संख्या में वृद्धि को लेकर कोई अनुमान लगाना कठिन है। उदाहरण के लिए इसे लेकर कोई स्पष्टता नहीं है कि भारत में कोरोना की तीसरी लहर कब आएगी और इसकी गंभीरता कितना होगी। अन्य का कहना है कि अगली लहर से पहले तीन महीने का वक्त मिल सकता है और जुलाई अंत तक हवाई यात्रियों की संख्या 2 लाख रोजाना तक पहुंच सकती है।
