Will India get benefit from a higher population of youth

After the report by the United Nations on India’s population, there has been a heated debate on the demographic dividend. The United Nations report states that India has a higher population of youth in its total population.

China argues that its demographic dividend is not yet over because it possesses a workforce with talented workers, which has fueled this debate further.

According to the World Population Report 2023 by the United Nations Population Fund, 14% of China’s population is over the age of 65, while in India; only 7% of the population falls in this age group.

In China, 18% of the population belongs to the age group of 10 to 24 years, while in India; this age group constitutes 26% of the population. The report states that there is a population of approximately 254 million people in the age group of 15 to 24 years in India, which is why India has the largest population of youth.

China’s current fertility rate per woman is only 1.2, while in India, it is 2. If this situation persists, India will have a larger youth population compared to China in the coming years.

However, does the size of the youth population make India capable of reaping demographic benefits?

Experts do not unanimously agree and believe that the country has an opportunity to reclaim these benefits. They have warned that labor and land reforms, among other policy measures, need to be taken to harness this potential. Otherwise, the youth population could also pose challenges.

The utilization of the demographic dividend depends on the capacity of the country. Whether the youth population is an advantage or a disadvantage depends on how we manage our economy. To achieve high economic development, better technology, higher savings, and investment rates should accompany the use of the youth population.

However, India is in a better position than China because. The number of youths attending schools and colleges for quality education is higher in China. While size is important, the skills of the workforce also play a crucial role. According to projections, India will enjoy the demographic dividend until around 2040.

युवाओं की अधिक आबादी से क्या भारत लाभ में रहेगा

भारत की आबादी पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र की रिपोर्ट के बाद जनसांख्यिकी लाभ पर बहस तेज हो गई है। संयुक्त राष्ट्र की रिपोर्ट में कहा गया है कि भारत की कुल आबादी में युवाओं की आबादी अधिक है।

चीन में 10 से 24 वर्ष आयुवर्ग के 18 फीसदी लोग हैं, जबकि भारत में इस वर्ग के 26 फीसदी लोग रहते है। रिपोर्ट में बताया गया है कि भारत में 15 से 24 साल आयुवर्ग की लगभग 25.4 करोड़ आबादी है। इस कारण भारत में युवाओं की सर्वाधिक आबादी है।

चीन की प्रति महिला प्रजनन दर मौजूदा कैलेंडर वर्ष में सिर्फ 1.2 है, जबकि भारत में यह 2 यदि यही स्थिति जारी रहती है तो यह आने वाले वर्षों में चीन की तुलना में भारत में अधिक युवा आबादी रहेगी।

लेकिन क्या युवा आबादी का आकार भारत को जनसंाख्यिकीय लाभ लेने में सक्षम बनाता है?

विशेषज्ञ इससे इत्तफाक नहीं रखते हैं और इनका मानना है कि देश को इस लाभ को वापस लेने का अवसर है। उन्होंने चेतावनी दी है कि इसे उपयोग करने के लिए श्रम और भूमि सुधार जैसे नीतिगत कदम उठाने होंगे। अन्यथा, युवा आबादी के कारण परेशानियां भी हो सकती हैं।

जनसांख्यिकीय लाभ युवा आबादी का उपयोग कैसे करना है यह देश की क्षमता पर निर्भर करता है। युवा आबादी लाभ है या हानि है यह इस बात पर निर्भर करता है कि हम अपनी आर्थिक व्यवस्था को कैसे प्रबंधित करते हैं। उच्च आर्थिक विकास के लिए युवा आबादी का उपयोग करने के लिए बेहतर तकनीक, उच्च बचत और निवेश दर होनी चाहिए।

हालांकि भारत चीन से इसलिए बेहतर स्थिति में है क्योंकि लोगों की गुणवत्ता और शिक्षा के लिए स्कूल और कॉलेजों में जाने वाले युवाओं की संख्या चीन में अधिक है। हालांकि आकार भी जरूरी है, लेकिन श्रमिकों के कौशल महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं। आकार के अनुसार, भारत लगभग 2040 तक जनसांख्यिकीय लाभ का आनंद उठाएगा।
