Petrol Lobby ‘Rich & Powerful’, but E20 Fuel is Flawless

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has said that the recent criticism of E20 fuel (a blend of 80% petrol and 20% ethanol) on social media is nothing but “sponsored misinformation” by the petrol lobby.
He was addressing the annual Auto Retail Conclave organized by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
In recent weeks, debates have been circulating on social media raising concerns that E20 fuel could adversely affect vehicle mileage and engine efficiency.
On this issue, Gadkari gave reassurance, saying: “Every business has lobbies. They have to protect their interests. You (FADA) are also a strong lobby in your own right. We expect your support. Some misinformation is being spread on social media regarding refined fuel. This is being sponsored by certain vested interests. The petrol lobby involved in this misinformation is very rich and powerful.”
On August 12, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had clarified that concerns regarding reduced fuel efficiency were “baseless” and that reverting to E0 fuel (pure petrol) would mean losing the hard-earned progress achieved in reducing pollution and advancing energy transition.
Amid government efforts to push alternative fuels and electric mobility, Gadkari also addressed questions about the future of petrol and diesel vehicles: “People keep asking me since I keep supporting alternative and bio-fuels, what will happen to petrol and diesel vehicles? There is no need to worry. The demand for petrol and diesel vehicles will still rise because vehicle manufacturing is consistently growing by about 15–20%. The international market is also very large.”
On the growth of India’s automobile sector, he noted: “When I took charge as minister, the size of the Indian automobile industry was ₹14 lakh crore, and India ranked seventh in the world. Just six months ago, we overtook Japan (in terms of volume). Now, we are in third place globally.”
