The Central Government has notified four new Labour Codes — The Wage Code (2019), The Industrial Relations Code (2020), The Social Security Code (2020), and The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code (2020). These codes are set to replace the existing 29 central labour laws.

To implement the four Labour Codes recently notified by the Central Government, state governments can frame rules according to their own requirements and jurisdiction.

The only condition is that the labour rules of the states must be in alignment with the spirit and intent of the new Labour Codes.

Labour has been placed in the Concurrent List. Therefore, each state will need to notify its own rules within its territory, provided that the broader objectives and principles of the Labour Codes remain intact. Ensuring uniformity and harmony is essential.
