In one of the largest agreements to date between Indian fertiliser companies and their foreign partners, National Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited (RCF), National Fertilizers Limited (NFL), and Indian Potash Limited (IPL) have signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia’s Uralchem Group. Under this MoU, a urea production plant with a capacity of 1.8 to 2 million tonnes will be established in Russia.

Signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India, this agreement represents one of the biggest joint ventures between Indian companies and foreign partners.

Until now, the largest joint venture in this sector has been Oman India Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO), established in Oman, with an annual production capacity of around 1.65 million tonnes of urea. Indian companies IFFCO and KRIBHCO are partners in OMIFCO.

According to information available on the website of Uralchem JSC (Joint Stock Company), it is part of the Uralchem Group, one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of nitrogen and compound fertilisers.

Uralchem Group is a leading global producer of mineral fertilisers and chemical products. Its major assets include three large Russian companies engaged in fertiliser and chemical manufacturing.

Welcoming the development, Uralchem stated that India is a major agricultural power globally and one of the world’s largest consumers of mineral fertilisers.

Beyond the joint venture, data shows that India’s fertiliser imports from Russia have grown significantly in recent years. Russia has emerged as one of the biggest suppliers of urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP) to India.
