A handbook or plywood production

During the journey of my long 30 + years in plywood manufacturing, starting from short sized Tea chest plywood to plywood manufacturing in Assam, I have seen many ups and down in the industry. But it is a fact that North East was producing plywood from high girth, matured forest Timber, like Hollong and Makai.

Those were the time, when large manufacturing capacity was controlled by efficient learned technical Production Managers. And they were very much cooperative in assisting and guiding the new lads of technicians of the small plywood industry.

In 1996, when the apex court banned the production in northeast India, two major outcome was seen. Plywood manufacturing shifted to Haryana and Punjab initially and then to rest of India gradually.  Another major change was that the plywood was successfully manufactured from 6 to 8 years old farm grown popular, which was initially developed by WIMCO to peel for Matchboxes.

Practically, a bigger challenge encountered, that, old and well established techniques for quality production were set aside, for full utilisation of the low girth juvenile Timber. Cheaper and fluctuating Timber prices lead to dethrone the concept of best and optimum utilisation of timber, aiming only for profits. Which in turn, destablised the theory of correct ethical and scientific process of Plywood manufacturing.

Meanwhile, numbers of industries flourished abundantly, but not the technicians. Industry was (and still is) mostly dependent for its production, on the contractors (Thekedars), not only for quality but also for quantity, who don’t have any scientific knowledge.

Positively, we can say that new generation, including the industry owners, learned the basics of Plywood production, during the course of time. And production process is more or less well handled by them. Although, almost everyone is unknown about the scientific technicalities of the day to day processes. Hence, any technical glitches is just solved, from the past experience of the available seniors only.

That’s why, a simple handbook was very much needed to clear the basic theories of plywood production. Dr S K NATH observed the Gap and tried to put his life long experience in A HANDBOOK OF PLYWOOD PRODUCTION. This book will immensely help thousands of technocrats and industry owners to understand and educate the basic principles of plywood production, by clearing the misconceptions of floor supervisor and thekedar.

It is possible, that even a single/smallest concept from the book, may bring immense savings, by correcting/changing the production process.
