The mandatory quality standards by BIS will halt the production and import of low quality cheap wood products. Obviously, this will have a positive effect on the market. BIS is now becoming active regarding standards. This will also yield good results. This is the belief of Yamunanagar’s plywood and MDF manufacturer Amit Goyal.

Your opinion on BIS standards?

After implementation of QCO, now BIS is also serious about implementing the standards. Manufacturers should also work transparently hence forth.

Obviously, if BIS sets quality standards as per the nature of wood, then understanding would have been more better. This can happen in two ways. Make a product as per the quality of the wood. Put a grade on it. Put furniture commercial or industrial grade as per the nature and density of wood. This will help consumers to acknowledge the product.

For example, plywood made from gurjan has a different strength. Same is the case with eucalyptus. Because its density is high. But this strength cannot be achieved from poplar or any other wood. What I mean to say is that the quality of a product comes from wood. So wood should be the basis of quality standards. Grades should be prepared according to parameter.

Benefits of this type of grading?

Firstly, it will be easy for consumers to know exactly which grade of wood product they are buying. And they will be able to decide, in which grade their requirement is being fulfilled.

When producers will make products according to their market demand, then poplar producing farmers will also benefit from it. Currently, poplar remains the first choice of farmers in agro forestry. With the increasing interest of the market in the products made from poplar, its demand will increase gradually and ultimately farmers will be benefited.

The first need of the country is to make capable farmers by benefitting them. On one hand, such initiatives will increase the income of farmers and on the other hand, the industry will be relieved to some extent in it’s operations.

Compulsion on shopkeepers?

The industrialists will prepare the products as per BIS standards. But what about shopkeepers and dealers? They can mislead the consumers by selling fake brands or low quality products in disguise of high quality.

To stop this, the shopkeeper will have to be made aware of this. He should also be warned that if the sample taken from his custody does not pass, according to the markings, then action will be taken against him too. If such a compulsion is made, then it will stop the shopkeeper’s mindset, which forces him to sell low quality goods of mischieveous brand.

Because in the wood industry, there is no dearth of people who play with the quality standards to make the product cheaper. If there is strictness in one place or state, then some producers of other places will start making cheap plywood and other wood products.

Factory operators in a cluster cannot do this. It is relatively easy to check them. Most of the licensee are manufacturing products as per the standards. But the shopkeepers have the extra option, they can start selling the goods procured from anywhere or anybody.

BIS is not attentive to this. One reason for this may be that the jurisdiction of BIS is the manufacture, not the shopkeeper. But BIS should increase its jurisdiction in this case. Contemporarily, shopkeepers will have to be made aware and warned.

How is this possible?

This is not difficult as much. BIS has to conduct seminars for dealers and shopkeepers for awareness. These seminars can be conducted through us. And most importantly, such programs should be publicized.

May be, the Retail and wholesale dealers of wood products and plywood are outside the scope of BIS, that’s why they also keep distance from the awareness programs of BIS.

In every programme of Manak Manthan, there was an effort to get the dealers to participate. But they did not. Because they do not feel the need for it right now.

What are the options?

We have to find a solution to this problem. They can be informed about the quality standards through email. The producers have emails and phone numbers of almost all the dealers and sellers. Everything is possible. Awareness programs should just start with the dealers and sellers.

BIS should also make small visuals to make consumers aware, we will promote and broadcast it through social media. This information can be conveyed to everyone in the shortest possible time. Everything is possible, just have to try in this direction.

Everyone will see the official BIS video message. TV is a very big and effective medium, which can prove to be an effective medium to give the message to everyone.

What can be the role of the producer in this?

However, BIS urges that the wood producers themselves should aware the dealers. For this, they should prepare the promotional material. The producer is ready to take this responsibility. We can put up sign boards and pamphlets at our shopkeepers. In which detailed information can be given about the mandatory BIS standards of plywood as well as detailed descriptions of standards and BIS Care App etc.

After all, we have to make consumers aware. We will take steps in this direction, individually as well as through association.
