Fuel Price Hikes May Push Up Fright Rate

Around 50,000 truckers, most of whom are single-truck owners, could be thrown out of business due to the recent fuel price hike. “Already, vehicle supply on the road is higher than required. With fuel price hike, owners will look to trim fleet sixe wherever needed. Due to this, small single-truck owners could be hurt badly,”

Small single-truck owners are usually suppliers to fleet owners, who outsource their business to these small players for better network and deeper penetration.

“Fuel cost is more than 50 per cent of their total cost, and to that extent, the cost push is high. Even though, the formula applied is such that they are not able to pass on nearly 80 percent of the hike to customers. This leaves them with no margin ahead,”

However, some small fleet operators are also taking advantage of the hikes.

“Small transporters that follow spot prices have been increasing rated in tandem with change in fuel prices,” 

“The quantum of increase taken by these operators is higher than the actual increase in fuel prices,” “If fuel prices go up by 4 per cent in a month, the rates of small transporters rise 6 per cent. They have been taking advantages of the fuel price hike and surge in demand,”

With petrol and diesel process continuously on the rise domestic freight costs have nowhere to go but northward.

In FY21, fuel prices have gone up by about 30 percent till date, said industry experts.

Officials are also of the view that the government’s move to hike fuel prices is in contradiction to its goal of lowering logistics cost across the country to single digit of the total cost of production. “With an already high operational cost, fuel rates are adding to the woes of logistics and transport firms, eating up margins. This is contradictory to the government’s goals of bringing down logistic costs from 13-15 per cent. If fuel cost continue to remain elevated, a corresponding increase in product delivery costs will become imperative, eventually resulting in higher inflation,” Meanwhile rentals for February have gone up 13-14 per cent compared to January.

एक-दो ट्रकों के मालिक आमतौर पर ट्रांसपोर्टरों को अपने वाहन ठेके पर चलाने के लिए देते हैं क्योंकि उनके पास बेहतर नेटवर्क होता है। उनकी कुल लागत का करीब 50 फीसदी हिस्सा ईंधन पर खर्च होता है। ऐसे में ईंधन के महंगा होने से लागत काफी बढ़ जाती है। मौजूदा हालात में बढ़ोतरी का करीब 80 फीसदी भार ग्राहकों पर डालने में सक्षम नहीं हैं। इसकी वजह से मार्जिन लगभग खत्म हो गया है और आगे मुश्किलें और बढ़ सकती है।’

हालांकि कुछ छोटे ट्रक आपरेटर इस बढ़ोतरी का लाभ भी उठा रहे हैं। हाजिर कीमतों को अपनाने वाले छोटे ट्रोटे ट्रांसपोर्टर ईंधन कीमतों में तेजी के हिसाब से मालभाड़ा बढ़ा रहे हैं।

इन आपरेटरों ने ईंधन के दाम में वास्तविक वृद्धि से कहीं ज्यादा मालभाड़ा बढ़ा दिया है। अगर ईंधन के दाम 4 फीसदी और बढ़ते हैं तो छोटे ट्रांसपोर्टरों के दाम 6 फीसदी तक बढ़ जाएंगे। ऐसे ट्रांसपोर्टर मांग बढ़ने और ईंधन कीमतों में बढ़ोतरी का फायदा उठा रहे हैं।

उद्योग के विशेषज्ञों का कहना है कि वित्त वर्ष 2021 में अब तक ईंधन के दाम प्रति लीटर करीब 30 फीसदी बढ़े हैं। ट्रांसपोर्टर कंपनियों के अधिकारियों को कहना है कि ईंधन कीमतों में बढ़ोतरी के सरकार के कदम परिवहन लागत कम करने के लक्ष्य के एकदम उलट है। परिचालन लागत पहले से ही ज्यादा है, ऐसे में ईंधन के दाम बढ़ने से लाॅजिस्टिक्स और ट्रांसपोर्टेशन कंपनियों की चिंता बढ़ गई है और मार्जिन सिकुड़ रहा है। सरकार ने परिवहन लागत 13-15 से घटाकर 8 फीसदी करने का लक्ष्य रखा है लेकिन मौजूदा हालात इसके उलट हैं। अगर ईंधन के दाम में इसी तरह बढ़ते रहे तो वस्तुओं की आपूर्ति की लागत भी बढ़ जाएगी, जिसक मुद्रस्फीति पर भी असर पड़ेगा।

फरवरी में मालभाड़ा जनवरी की तुलना में 13 से 14 फीसदी बढ़ गया है। आमतौर पर अंतिम तिमाही में कीमतें बढ़ती हैं क्योंकि सभी क्षेत्र के विनिर्माताओं का जोर वित्त वर्ष खत्म होने से पहले अपनी इन्वेंट्री खाली करने की होती है।
