Indigenous manufacturers of nitrile gloves (gloves used to protect hands from infection, which are mostly used by doctors) has demanded the government to make strict rules to stop dumping of gloves through import.
Nitrile gloves manufacturer’s demand
- The market is flooded with poor quality gloves due to dumping.
- A manufacture said, “The production of nitrile gloves in India is a testament to the growing manufacturing capacity of our country. We are proud that we are contributing to making our country self-reliant by adopting the Prime Minister’s vision of Make in India. The Ministry of Health, Ministry of Commerce and Industry and BIS have always maintained high standards.”
- Manufacturers say substandard gloves from countries like Thailand, Malaysia and China are being dumped into India under various non-medical HSN codes.
- Another glove manufacturer said, “Some importers are pressurizing the government to reduce the quality standards of gloves. So that easy imports of low quality gloves into the country is as certained.
- Glove manufacturers in India, are manufacturing the product as per the quality standards of BIS since Covid. Gloves manufactures manufacture the products as per the prescribed standards, and have not even requested the government to reduce the standard.
- Those importing low quality gloves argue that it will be used for other than medical purposes such as fish farming, housekeeping, cleaning. But this is not true. These gloves are sent to hospitals for surgeries and medical services as well as to those areas where there is a possibility of infection after repacking.
The plywood industry is also struggling with similar situation. It is worth mentioning that as the glove manufacturers are facing problems due to cheap and low quality gloves. Plywood manufacturers are also facing the same problem. Cheap plywood is being dumped in India from countries like Nepal, China and Thailand. Market is flooded with cheap plywood. The result is that local plywood manufacturers are in trouble. Because they have to compete with imported plywood on price. Now if the quality standards of imported plywood are strict then it can definitely benefit our plywood manufacturers.
DPIIT is already in the process for plywood manufacturers what the glove manufacturers are demanding now.
