Demand to Increase Raw Material Resources in Kerala

The North Malabar Plywood and Doors Manufacturers Association, met the Hon Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri V. D. Satheesan, on 9th September, and presented a memorandum/representation regarding the urgent need for working on augmenting wood raw material resources in the State.

The Association pushed the need for utilising non-forest degraded lands, unused government/public lands, fallow lands and private lands for promoting agro/social-forestry activities with native trees such as Malabar Neem (Melia Dubia), Anjali, and Mahagony, so that the biodiversity aspect is also looked after.

There is a need to undertake due diligence and techno-commercial study in regard to these aspects. The Association also requested for policy changes and easing of timber plantation and harvest, across the State, which would attract more investors into farm-wood and social forestry wood production.

Mr. Vaidyanathan, technical advisor to the Association, briefed the Hon CM on the silent but decades-old contribution of the wood-based industry sector of Kerala to rural livelihoods and plantation growth, in addition to developing technical talent through the Kannur University Wood Science & Technology masters programme.

NMPDM Association President Shri T. P. Narayanan, Chairman Shri Vasudevan, Secretary Shri Abdul Gafoor, Treasurer Shri Zainudeen, were part of the representative delegation.
