Reduction in Consumption of Agriculture-Grade Urea

Yamunanagar has recorded a remarkable reduction in the consumption of subsidised agriculture-grade urea during FY 2025-26.

According to Point of Sale (POS) data collected by the Haryana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, total urea consumption in the district decreased from 1,52,725.068 MT in 2024-25 to 1,25,114.692 MT in 2025-26. This represents a reduction of 27,610.376 MT (22.06%) in one year. This reduction is equivalent to approximately 6 lakh bags of urea (45 kg each).

One of the key factors behind this reduction is the industry’s growing focus on research and the use of urea-free resins. Initial industrial trials of the new urea-free resin technology have shown encouraging results and indicated strong potential for commercial use.

This development is being viewed as an important step towards reducing dependence on conventional urea-based raw materials, while exploring more sustainable and potentially cost-effective alternatives for the industry.

Urea-free resin can be produced through several formulation methods using soya protein, wheat flour, melamine, lignin, starch, and other suitable reactive chemicals.

Research is also being conducted on soya-based and other bio-based materials as potential approaches to reducing formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels.

The growing adoption of urea-free resin could offer several potential benefits to the plywood sector across the country, including: Reduced dependence on urea-based resins, Opportunities to lower production costs, Greater manufacturing flexibility and The possibility of producing plywood with lower emissions

The reduction in urea consumption and the development of urea-free resin technology could prove to be an important step towards more sustainable and cost-efficient production in the plywood industry.
