The paper industry is also struggling like plywood due to cheap imports. Harsh Pati Singhania, the head of JK Group India’s largest paper manufacturer, has recently said that however the demand for paper is increasing, yet profits are decreasing. The government should intervene for the betterment of the industry. He was referring to the Quality Control Orders. Because the government has recently implemented mandatory BIS certification to strengthen the wood industry, which will restrict imports.
He was apprehensive on the aggressive policy of America safe guarding its indigenous industry, and consequently if it increases tariff on imported foreign paper, then the countries exporting paper to America, especially some Asian countries, which have increased their production capacity significantly, can divert and dump their goods in India. Which may be a big threat to the Indian paper industry.
Apart from this, he demanded the government to check the quality of imported goods and said that a policy should be made to deal with this. India’s paper market is 230 lakh tonnes. It includes packaging boards, printing and writing papers along with news print.
He also said that apart from this, the biggest challenge the paper industry is facing is that a large part of the wood grown from agroforestry and plantation promoted by them is being used in the wood industry, especially the plywood and panel industry. Due to which the demand for wood as well as its price has more than doubled.
Expressing concern, he said that the plywood industry is not paying adequate attention to the promotion of agroforestry to fulfill the supply of its raw material. Rather; it is still dependent on the agroforestry, promoted either by paper industry or on the sole discretion of farmers.
To overcome the situation, the wood industry should also work on war footing towards promotion of agroforestry. Because tree plantation and agroforestry are the only options which will, not only provide relief to the plywood industry but will also benefit the entire wood industry including the paper industry. Further, along with plantation in barren land, plantation should be promoted on a mass level.
He said that there is an urgent need of joint efforts of panel Ind. Along with paper Ind. to implement these measures.
