There are two types of productivity:

  • Individual productivity that is in our control.
  • Revenue productivity that is in the hands of the customer.

One is yet to come across a single case of revenue productivity being high while individual productivity is low. The smile on a customer’s face when you deliver quickly is the greatest reward in any job. So, high productivity is the most fun you can have in a job.

The fact is that our software engineers are far more productive when they are sent to the West, say, the US or France. In many cases, they are 3-4 times more productive. This is the result of personal attitude. People stop at red lights in San Francisco, but not in Bengaluru. This is considered ‘Independences’ as is the ‘right’ to be non-productive in Bengaluru.

To increase individual productivity, there is no substitute for hard work. An athlete works hard to get his body to retain muscle memory. Software engineers are no different. They compete in an increasingly complex world. If they have not practiced diligently and modernised themselves, chances of success are low. Hence, hard work is a given.

A question to many youngsters arguing against the idea of hard work: ‘Is your work so repulsive that you have to reserve only specific times for it?’

To increase revenue productivity, we need good business models.

Most companies stick to trading people’s time, rather than software products and projects, thereby perpetuating a model that inherently encourages non-productive behaviour.

By paying low entry salaries, good and ‘in demand’ people go to companies that pay competitive salaries, even if they are small.

Low salaries – offshoot of profit ambitions in a competitive industry with old business models – attract lower skills and abilities, thus driving down customer expectations, resulting in more squeeze on revenue and, hence, a bad cycle.

Instead, if we deliver value and get customers to pay more, since we are delivering value, we can pay more to more productive people and create a virtuous cycle.

If a task has to be done – personal or professional – it has to be placed in a prioritized queue and ticked off according to the priority at that point.
