Sensible to buy local even if it’s costlier than imports

Buying domestic products even if they are more expensive than imported items is a sensible decision as low-priced imports affect the manufacturing sector and, by extension, consumers, in the long run, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said recently.

“If a product is 1 or 2 per cent costlier than an imported product… or probably even a bit costlier than an imported product, very often it’s sensible to buy Indian. Because in the short run, large international companies can dump material at low prices. But in the long run, if Indian manufacturing companies don’t survive or are not able to deal with this competition, we will have (to pay) terrible prices for the same products,” said Goyal.

No crutches
Goyal stood firm against special protection for the domestic industry saying that his ministry remained focused on sustainable growth and not on giving “handouts” for exports. “Subsidies have never done any good for business. Instead, they have helped us remain dependent on crutches and never engage with the world from a position of strength and power,” he stressed.

Various export sectors have continued to demand more export incentives given that large proportions of orders continue to be cancelled and global demand remains weak. Case in point, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has demanded the government immediately expand the scope of existing export promotion schemes, besides allowing rollover of forward cover without interest and penalty, and automatic enhancement of limit by 25 per cent to address liquidity challenges.

केंद्रीय वाणिज्य एवं उद्योग मंत्री पीयूष गोयल ने कहा देश के लोगों को स्वदेशी वस्तुओं की खरीदारी पर अधिक जोर देना चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा कि आयातित वस्तुएं भले ही सस्ती क्यों न हो, लेकिन घरेलू विनिर्माता और ग्राहक दोनों के लिहाज से स्वदेशी वस्तुओं की खरीदारी सकारात्मक एवं लाभप्रद साबित होगी। उन्होंने कहा कि सस्ता आयात घरेलू विनिर्माण उद्योग को प्रभावित करता है और इससे उपभोक्ता भी प्रभावित होते हैं।

गोयल ने कहा, ‘अगर घरेलू उत्पाद बाहर से आई वस्तुओं के मुकाबले थोड़ी बहुत महंगी होती है तब भी भारतीय उत्पाद खरीदना बेहतर विकल्प है। इसकी वजह यह है कि लघु अवधि में बड़ी अंतरराष्ट्रीय कंपनियां काफी कम कीमतों पर अपने उत्पाद घरेलू बाजार में खपा सकती हैं और दीर्घ अवधि में अगर देसी विनिर्माता अपना कारोबारी अस्तित्व नहीं बचा पाते हैं या प्रतिस्पद्र्धा का सामना नहीं कर पाते हैं तो उस स्थिति में हमें एक बड़ी कीमत चुकानी होगी।’
सहारे की जरूरत नहीं

गोयल ने घरेलू उद्योग को विशेष रियायत देने के खिलाफ भी दिखे। उन्होंने कहा कि उनके मंत्रालय ने सतत एवं निरंतर वृद्धि पर ध्यान दिया है न कि निर्यात के बदले कुछ विशेष लाभ देने पर जोर दिया है। उन्होंने कहा, ‘सब्सिडी से कभी किसी कारोबार का भला नहीं हुए है। इसका उलटा असर यह हुआ हम रियायतों पर निर्भर हो गए हैं और पूरी ताकत के साथ दुनिया में प्रतिस्पद्र्धा नहीं कर पा रहे हैं।’

वैश्विक स्तर पर मांग कमजोर होने और कई सौदे रद्द होने के बीच देश में कई निर्यात क्षेत्रों ने सरकार से लगातार प्रोत्साहनों की मांग की है। विदेशी पूंजीगोयल ने कहा कि सरकार देश को विनिर्माण केंद्र के तौर पर विकसित करने के लिए विदेशी निवेशकों को आमंत्रित करने में सक्रिय रही है। उन्होंने कहा कि इससे देश में विनिर्माण को बढ़ावा तो मिलेगा ही, साथ ही देश निर्यात अग्रसर हो जाएगा।
