China dominates global manufacturing. Currently, it accounts for 32% of global production. The shares of the United States, Japan, Germany, India, and South Korea are 16%, 7%, 5%, 3%, and 3%, respectively.

China is the world’s largest trader and has long been the biggest exporter of manufactured goods. This includes both Chinese and foreign companies operating there. Observing how global business has increasingly concentrated in China, the world now wants to bring more diversity into this system.

China is a major source of manufacturing, but India and several other countries want to position themselves as alternative destinations that can replace China.

“Rules-Based International Order”:

What can be done? India’s ultimate objective is clear: countries with similar thinking should increasingly adhere to a rules-based international order so that there is pressure on all to follow the rules. While our final goal must be ambitious, we also need to take gradual steps. Problems arise in a rules-based system when these rules are broken.

In international affairs, this means that territorial national sovereignty is paramount. In trade, rules prevent discriminatory tariffs between different countries.

Three principles must be followed:

Do not expect all countries in a group to agree on every issue. Instead, three or four like-minded countries should unite in areas of cooperation and uphold international rules.

Once rules are established in a specific area, it must be ensured that all countries are clear about them and actively welcome the initiative.

The goal is to build an inclusive and participatory system.

Participation is voluntary, but once a country joins an initiative, it must adhere to the rules— regardless of whether the rules favor a specific person or a specific issue.

Can this be effective?

We must explore multiple options across different areas so that we can play our rightful role in the world.
