The return of stability in business may take time

The conflict in West Asia and comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump indicate a possible return of global colonial tendencies, according to Uday Kotak, Founder and Director of Kotak Mahindra Bank.

He compared the current geopolitical situation to the period before 1945 and warned that businesses should not assume that stability will return automatically.

From a business perspective, he outlined two possible scenarios:

• Continuation of the post-1945 trend, where stability gradually returns after crises.
• A structural shift similar to the pre-1945 era, marked by prolonged instability and a reconfiguration of global power.

As the Geo Political situation evolves in the future, the stability of Global business word will be determined by this.

Speaking at an event organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on Tuesday, he stated that if India truly wants to become self-reliant (Atmanirbhar), it must prioritize investment in research and innovation.

He said, “How much of our profits are we investing in research and innovation? Very little. Because we believe we can buy technology, procure rare minerals from China, and access Microsoft and other technologies from the U.S. But where is Atmanirbhar Bharat in that?”

Kotak further pointed out that Indian companies tend to focus more on services rather than product development. He noted that most IT service companies emphasize services, and very few move toward building products. In contrast, companies in the United States focus on creating products by leveraging services.

He also emphasized the need to strengthen mid-level manufacturing, which includes projects involving investments ranging from ₹100 crore to ₹1,000 crore. He described this segment as a missing link in India’s industrial ecosystem.

He concluded, “In my view, the biggest opportunity for Atmanirbhar Bharat lies in mid-level manufacturing. This is the weakest segment, and it is where we must focus our efforts.”
