A new study states that around 10 to 15 million new air conditioners are installed across India every year. Over the next decade, an additional 130 to 150 million AC units are expected to be installed.

If the government does not introduce new policy measures, electricity demand could rise by 120 gigawatts by 2030 and by as much as 180 gigawatts by 2035. This would account for more than 30 percent of the country’s projected peak electricity demand.

The study says, “Air conditioners are already adding 60–70 gigawatts to peak power demand. After sunset, this demand exceeds the grid’s capacity.”

It further warns that if the government does not intervene with policy measures, the risk of blackouts will increase and electricity will become more expensive. However, with better policies, the situation could benefit consumers, manufacturers, and the power grid alike.
